November 2022 Search Tool Updates

Just in time to catch the Black Friday sales, nearly 400 more products have been added to our database! Plus, we've added another new store, made improvements to our stock status filter (so you can now easily filter out all out of stock products), added new 'Quick Start' links to make it quicker and easier to find what you need, and made plenty of improvements to our FAQs! Healthy Cat launched officially on 29 May 2022, making us now almost 6 months old.

Every other day our team are on here, tinkering away with a never ending stream of improvements. Here’s a quick summary of all of the updates you can now enjoy:

  • Just in time to catch the Black Friday sales, nearly 400 new products have been added to our database. While we haven't added any new brands, some brands have brought out new flavours or bundles. We've also ensured that we have added all possible stockists for all of the products and stores we currently track. This will greatly help you to find the best price for any specific item you're looking for.
  • Stock status filter improved: Our stock status filter now works for all products and stores, and warns you if product availability is based on your location.
  • New store added: Freezy Paws - we already have many Freezy Paws products in our databse where they are stocked at other larger pet shops, so it seemed only right to add Freezy Paws' own shop too!
  • We've added 5 new 'Quick Links' to our home page and food search pages to help you get to the products you're after quicker, without having to worry about choosing what you want via the filters.
  • Our FAQs have been updated and expanded on, to bring more clarity and convenience for those wanting to learn more about healthy cat food options.
  • Coupon code updates have been happening quite frequently as the sales come and go.

That’s it for this update! Work continues to make Healthy Cat better and better. The main things on our to-do list are:

  • Back-end improvements that will help the site to stay more accurate and be easier to manage.
  • Add Coles and Woolworths to our stores.

We also have the following features in progress, but on hold for now until time permits:

  • For those who use a raw meal completer such as Raw Meow Mix, we're working on an Adult Cat Raw Meal Calculator! We'll be very pleased to soon bring you a super easy-to-use calculator that will output a crystal clear recipe and shopping list customised specifically for your cat. This will ensure you can easily plan and prepare raw meals without worrying about whether you're using the right ingredient amounts, as well as know exactly how much you'll be spending each day/week.
  • Add a Litter Search, allowing you to browse litter pricing in the same way you presently can with food.

Equivalent total weight & cost per 100g

Certain products require you to either add water to them at home (such as bone broth & freeze dried foods), or feed them in much smaller portions due to them not containing much/any water (such as air dried foods). The Equivalent cost per 100g and Equivalent Total weight values next to dehydrated food types show the cost per 100g and the total weight of food you could make from the product after you add the manufacturer’s recommended amount of water, or factor in the reduced portion sizes that you would need to feed your cat when compared to foods that already contain water. This way you can fairly compare wet and dehydrated foods.

For example, if your cat normally eats a 60g meal of wet food (which typically contains around 75% water), the nutritionally and calorically equivalent amount of air dried or freeze dried food that you would feed your cat would be around 15g (though this can vary depending on the food manufacturer, so be sure to always check the feeding guide on the packaging).

Therefore, wet food would seem a lot cheaper if you only compared them by the product weight. But once you factor in the missing water and serving size differences, it comes out much more even.

That’s why our search tool will show you both the actual and the equivalent weights.

When sorting by price, our tool compares dehydrated foods to wet foods by using the equivalent weight, so that you can fairly compare them.

Brands

The food brands shown on our website are strictly limited to those that meet AAFCO standards and are approved by the Australian Raw Fed Cats community. All products are thoroughly vetted for their ingredients and nutrient proportions. You won’t find any products in our search tool containing species-inappropriate ingredients, grains, or fillers.

The only dry food products shown are those that are freeze or air dried raw, and are intended to be rehydrated or given as a supplement (such as being used as a topper or treat) with wet foods.

We take extra special care to ensure the accuracy of all products shown. All products are added to our search tool manually by a human, and triple checked for accuracy.

If a brand is not shown in our search tool, it is very likely that it doesn’t meet the standards of an appropriate diet for cats. It could also be that the brand is new and has not yet come to our attention, in which case we’d love to hear about it!

Preferences

Our search tool makes it easy for cat parents to filter out food options that aren’t as healthy as others, or those that could cause significant harm to cats with certain health concerns.

For example, many people avoid products containing fish, as it is a problematic ingredient for several reasons. If you’d like to learn more about this, check out our FAQ.

Likewise, some brands contain higher levels of certain ingredients than others, which can lead to side effects for some cats, such as a higher concentration of bone leading to constipation.

Stores

We regularly review new stores to see whether they’d make a good addition to our search tool. A few of the things we consider are:

  • Are they competitive? If the store’s pricing is consistently much higher than our current stores, we don’t feel there is much benefit in adding them.
  • Do they offer flat rate, or reasonable variable shipping rates? If a store has a complicated or high price point in terms of their shipping costs, they aren’t likely to be competitive overall with our current stores.
  • Do they ship state-wide, nationally or are they at least available to a wide range of people? We won’t be adding every single local pet store out there, even if they are cheaper in the end. Our tool is designed to serve as many people as possible, so we try to stick to stores that are available to a large number of people, or who exclusively sell a great brand.

Food Types

Our search tool offers foods that fall into 3 diet categories:

  • Complete: These foods are suitable for everyday feeding as they are nutritionally complete and balanced. See our note below about comparing the pricing of complete food types.
  • Incomplete: These foods are intended to supplement your cat’s usual food, such as treats, topper, or bone broth.
  • Meal Completer: Meal completer is mixed with water to create a nutrient-dense gravy which can then be added to your choice of fresh, raw muscle meat. The meal completer provides a perfectly balanced mix of the nutrients your cat requires alongside those that are found in raw muscle meat. This is a quick and simple way to make your own fresh, raw and balanced meals for your cat.

Note: Freeze or air dried food is dehydrated, and it is generally intended that you will either add your own water to it at home, or feed a much smaller amount of it compared to food that is sold containing water already (wet foods). Our search tool factors this in for you by listing an actual weight (the real weight of the bag) and an equivalent weight (the weight of the food you could make from that bag after you add water, or factor in the reduced portion sizes). Our tool will use the equivalent weight to compare dehydrated foods against wet foods, to ensure it’s fair. You can therefore compare all complete food types against each other and get an accurate result.
